Gilmour's Pink Floyd surprised most people by appearing together with Roger Waters for a special occasion on 2 July 2005. The reunited Pink Floyd became the main act at the huge Live 8 concert which was an international TV event and released on DVD on 7 November the same year.

Pink Floyd with Roger Waters performed 4 classic tracks towards the end of the show. With them on stage were old friends of the band: Dick Parry (sax), Tim Renwick (guitar), Jon Carin (keyboards) and Carol Kenyon (backing vocals onComfortably Numb).

The Live8 concert was arranged by Bob Geldof. Bob Geldof was also the man behind the Live Aid concert in 1985 and is well-known to many Floyd-fans for his appearance in the movie Pink Floyd The Wall. It was Geldof who personally convinced the old bandmates in Pink Floyd that it was time to put the old conflicts aside and regroup for this cause. The last Pink Floyd concert with the original 4 band-mates together on stage had been in 1981.

Bob Geldof has announced that the income from the sales of the DVD are donated to the Band Aid Trust for relief of hunger and poverty in Africa.
