The first (and shortest) version of the song was called 'Murderistic Women'. This version was first played live in John Peel's radio-show Top Gear on June 25th 1968. The radio-recording can only be found on the bootleg: 'The Complete Top Gear Sessions, Live 1967-69' and 'Survivor'. 'Careful With That Axe, Eugene' was issued as single B-side in December 1968. One year after a third version was recorded as 'Come In Number 51, Your Time Is Up'. This version was made for the the film 'Zabriskie Point'. See also 'The Journey.'
